While folk music has been around for as long as spoken word music itself, folk rock rose became popular during the 1960s and hasn't really looked back since. Rising to prominence in the U.S. and UK during this time, folk rock artists were among the first rock stars. Playing traditional folk music with rock instrumentation, the folk rock movement was also influenced by elements of the British invasion and elements of beat music. Over the years, folk rock bands have continued to maintain popularity and while the genre doesn't top the charts anymore, it's influence cannot be denied.

So, what are the best folk rock bands and folk rock artists? Any list of folk rock bands and artist has to include the likes of The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Young, America, Crosby, Stills and Nash and more recently, Mumford & Sons. These groups are widely recognized as some of the best folk rock bands and for good reason. Their music is and remains wildly popular and their legacy within folk music cannot be disputed.
